Attention Economic, Finance and Business Editors
Producer Price Indexes to be combined in new ABS publications

Publication of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) range of Producer Price Indexes (PPIs) will be consolidated in two new quarterly titles commencing with the June quarter 2001. The final issue of the existing 10 quarterly PPI publications for the March quarter 2001 will be released over the next three days.

Peter Harper, Head of the ABS's Economic Accounts Division, said the new format would allow for PPI data to be integrated, giving a better picture of the wider economy.

"This restructure will provide a new and integrated focus for the PPIs which will provide users with a better understanding of price pressures as they impact on the producing sectors of the economy," he said.

"One publication will contain the International Trade Price Indexes (ITPI) and the other will contain the remaining Producer Price Indexes. The headline indicator of the new PPI publication will be the economy wide Stage of Production (SOP) indexes. All information presently published will continue to be available."
