WAGE PRICE INDEXES

Australia/Sector (trend)

In the June quarter 2012, the Public sector wage price index rose 0.8%, lower than the Private sector (1.0%) and the All sectors wage price index which rose 0.9%.

The Public sector rise of 3.1% through the year to the June quarter 2012 was below that of the Private sector (3.9%). Private sector wages continued to show stronger growth than the Public sector.


State/Territory (original)

Western Australia recorded the largest quarterly All sectors rise (0.9%) while the Northern Territory recorded the smallest (0.4%). New South Wales (0.5%) was the only state or territory to record a quarterly rise that was lower than in the June quarter 2011 (0.6%). Tasmania (0.6%) and the Northern Territory (0.4%) both recorded the same quarterly rise as in the June quarter 2011. Rises through the year ranged from 3.2% for Tasmania to 4.8% for Western Australia.

In the Private sector, Victoria and Western Australia recorded the largest quarterly rise of 0.9%, while the Australian Capital Territory recorded the smallest (0.3%). Rises through the year in the Private sector ranged from 3.3% for the Northern Territory to 4.9% for Western Australia.

In the Public sector, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory recorded the largest quarterly rise of all states and territories (1.1%) while New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory all recorded the smallest quarterly rise (0.4%).

The largest through the year rise of all states and territories in the Public sector was recorded by Western Australia (4.6%) while Tasmania recorded the smallest (2.7%).

In the June quarter 2012, Wholesale trade (1.6%) recorded the largest quarterly rise for All sectors. The smallest rise for All sectors in the June quarter 2012 was 0.1%, recorded by Accommodation and food services. Through the year, the largest All sectors rise was 5.2% recorded by Mining. The smallest All sectors through the year rise was recorded by Health care and social assistance (2.6%).

Wholesale trade recorded the largest quarterly rise in the Private sector of 1.6%. The smallest quarterly rise (0.1%) was recorded by Accommodation and food services.

In the Public sector, Electricity, gas, water and waste services had the largest quarterly rise (1.1%) while Professional, scientific and technical services and, Health care and social assistance had the smallest (0.2%).
