Definition of Family and Domestic Violence

Family and Domestic Violence is defined broadly by Western Australia Health to include physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, social abuse and economic abuse.

In practice, it is defined according to the presence of ‘warning signs’ in presenting patients and then confirmed through targeted screening questions as outlined in the Guidelines for Responding to Family and Domestic Violence.

FDV is recorded using the International Classification of Diseases version 10 Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) codes.

Collection methodology

Practitioners in Western Australian hospitals collect and record information about Family and Domestic Violence according to standard protocols. They are required to maintain up to date and accurate patient case notes which include information relating to the minimum dataset items as described above. All hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, emergency department staff, and social workers are required to attend Family and Domestic Violence training.
