INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN SERVICES BY PARTNER COUNTRY

INTRODUCTION

This article provides preliminary calendar year data for 2005 for Australia's international trade in services, for exports (credits) and imports (debits), by selected trading partners.

Interpretation of data

Data released in this article is preliminary, with final data for the December quarter 2005 not yet available. As the data is preliminary care should be exercised in interpreting the data. More comprehensive and updated estimates for 2005 will be published with the March 2006 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0).

The quality of statistics of international trade in services by partner country is considered to be good, although there are occasional difficulties due to lack of information or the confidentiality of the data for trading partners involved.

A comprehensive explanation of the data sources used and the methodology applied in the compilation of partner country statistics is provided in Chapter 17 of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia - Concepts, Sources and Methods (cat. no. 5331.0). This publication can be accessed on the ABS web site (www.abs.gov.au).

Analysis of Australian trade with selected partner countries

In the calendar year 2005 Australia recorded a deficit of $1.5 billion in the balance on services. The largest trade in services deficit was recorded with United States of America at $2.0 billion. Deficits were recorded for most European trading partners, with the exception of small surpluses with Belgium and Luxembourg, Ireland, Norway and Sweden. Australia recorded surpluses with a number of its Asian trading partners, the largest being with Japan at $1.3 billion, China at $1.2 billion and Korea at $0.9 billion, although the balance of trade with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) recorded an overall deficit of $1.1 billion in 2005.

In terms of Australia's service exports, the top 6 countries, United States of America, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, China and Singapore, contributed 52% of the total export value. For Australia's services imports, the top 6 countries, United States of America, United Kingdom, Singapore, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong contributed 50% to the total import value.
