CULTURAL FUNDING

Cultural funding by government results have been released for 2009-10!

In 2009-10 total government funding for cultural activities was $6,658.1m; an increase of 2% from 2008-09 ($6,525.1m). Funding from state and territory governments accounted for the largest proportion of this total (45% or $3,003.3m), followed by the Australian Government (37% or $2,457.0m) and local governments (18% or $1,197.7m).

On a per capita basis, cultural funding provided by all levels of government equated to $300.56 per person in 2009-10. Of this value, funding provided by the Australian Government contributed $110.92 while the contributions from the state and territory governments' and local governments were $135.58 per person and $54.07 per person respectively.

More information about cultural funding in Australia can be found in our publication Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2009-10 (cat. no. 4183.0).

Work has also begun on the sixteenth annual cultural funding report, Cultural Funding in Australia, Three Tiers of Government 2009-10 which is produced for the Statistics Working Group (SWG) by the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS). The report includes more detailed commentary and data (especially for state and territory governments) than that which was published in the aforementioned Cultural Funding publication and is expected to be available on the SWG website in November.
