NOTES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the 2009-10 Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS) on the attendance of people aged 15 years and over at selected cultural venues and events. The survey collected data about the demographic characteristics of those who attended the surveyed venues and events and their frequency of attendance during the 12 month period prior to interview.

Information on this topic was previously collected in the 2005-06 MPHS, in the General Social Survey (GSS) in 2002 and 2006, as well as in the Survey of Attendance at Selected Culture/Leisure Venues which was collected as a supplementary survey to the Monthly Population Survey (MPS) in April 1999, March 1995 and June 1991. Data for the April 1999 MPS and the 2005-06 MPHS are included for comparative purposes. However, care should be taken when comparing results from these surveys, as the methodology differed and this may affect the validity of comparisons. See paragraphs 23 to 25 of the Explanatory Notes for further information.

Information on the concepts, methods and definitions used in the survey, reliability of the results, definitions and interpretation are included in the Explanatory Notes, Technical Note and Glossary. Unless otherwise specified, differences between data items highlighted in the Summary of Findings are statistically significant (refer to paragraphs 11-13 of the Technical Note). The tables in this publication are also available at the state level in Excel spreadsheet format from the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>.

ROUNDING

Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of component items and the published total. Published percentages are calculated prior to rounding of the figures and therefore some discrepancy may occur between these percentages and those that could be calculated from the rounded figures.
