2011 CENSUS COUNTDOWN - connecting with local communities
With the date of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) Census of Population and Housing drawing near, the largest peacetime logistical exercise in Australia is about to commence. On 9 August 2011, the count will begin.
Like each Census before it, the goal of this Census is to enumerate the Australian people. The Census remains the most comprehensive method of providing a snapshot of Australia, our characteristics and where we live. From the centres of the state capitals, to the furthest reaches of the Outback, people will be counted.
The data gathered in the Census is used to support planning, decision-making and funding at every level of government. In order to make informed policy decisions, governments require relevant, timely and accurate information.
The Census Dictionary, which is to be released in May 2011, will detail which data items will be available as part of the first release in June 2012.
The first results from the 2011 Census will be made public in June 2012.
