NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This release brings together statistics on deaths and mortality in Australia. Data refer to deaths registered during the calendar year shown, unless otherwise stated. State or territory relates to state or territory of usual residence, unless otherwise stated.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Death rates for 2012 have been calculated using preliminary 30 June 2012 Estimated Resident Population (ERP), based on the results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing (2011 Census).

Rates for the period 1992 to 2011 have been revised to reflect revisions in ERP due to rebasing and recasting following the 2011 Census. For further information see Final Rebasing of Australia's Population Estimates, September Quarter 2006 – June Quarter 2011 and Recasting 20 Years of ERP.

Infant mortality rates for 2005 to 2010 have been revised. This is due to births data being revised to include previously unprocessed NSW birth registrations for the period 2005 to 2010. Of the 33,122 unprocessed registrations, 32,731 registrations were in NSW and 391 were in all other states and territories. For further information see Explanatory Note 12 in Australian Demographic Statistics, Dec 2012 (cat. no. 3101.0).

For the standard Australian population used in the calculation of standardised death rates see Australian Demographic Statistics, Dec 2012 (cat. no. 3101.0) - select from the Downloads tab, Data Cubes, Standard Population for Use in Age-Standardisation Table.

Data cubes containing death and mortality statistics under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) have been released and are available electronically from the Downloads tab of this release on the ABS website (see Table 4: Deaths, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4, 2006 to 2012 and Table 5: Deaths, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2, 2001 to 2012).

ROUNDING

Calculations as shown in the commentary sections of this release are based on unrounded figures. Calculations using rounded figures may differ from those published.

Every effort is made to minimise error by working closely with data providers, the careful design of forms, training of processing staff, and efficient data processing procedures.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The efforts of Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages to improve the data quality, coverage and timeliness of death registration information, processes and systems are noted and valued by the ABS.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Where necessary, tables have had small values suppressed or randomised to protect confidentiality. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals.
