NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication brings together statistics on deaths and mortality in Australia. Data refer to deaths registered during the calendar year shown, unless otherwise stated. State or territory relates to state or territory of usual residence, unless otherwise stated.

Populations used in the calculation of death rates for 2006 and earlier years are the final estimated resident population by age and sex based on results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (2006 Census) and earlier Censuses. Death rates for 2007 to 2010 are calculated using 2006 Census based revised 30 June estimated resident population for each year, while rates for 2011 are calculated using 2006 Census based preliminary 30 June 2011 estimated resident population.

The standard population used in the calculation of standardised death rates is total persons in the Australian population at 30 June 2001.

Sub-state 30 June 2011 estimated resident populations were only compiled based on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing (2011 Census). As such, these 2011 Census based preliminary estimated resident populations are provided and used in the calculation of death rates for sub-state data cubes for the years 2007 to 2011.

In September quarter 2011 the high number of death registrations in New South Wales was queried with the New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Information provided by the Registry indicates that these fluctuations may be the result of changes in processing rates. This may have contributed to the increase in the number of death registrations for New South Wales in 2011. New South Wales deaths in 2011 (50,661) were 5.7% higher than in 2010 (47,945).

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Death rates for 2010 have been revised using 2006 Census based revised 30 June 2010 estimated resident population, which takes into account revisions to population components.

Death rates for 2007 to 2010 at the sub-state level (Tables 4, 5, 6 and 7) have been revised using 2011 Census based preliminary 30 June estimated resident populations for these years.

The number of deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians registered in Western Australia and, as a consequence, Australia in the years 2007 to 2009 were overstated in previous releases. Revised data were released in data cubes (Tables 1, 16, 17, 18 and 19) on 24 May 2012 in association with Deaths, Australia, 2010 (cat. no. 3302.0). For more information see Introductory Notes - Deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians registered in Western Australia in recent years in Deaths, Australia, 2010 (cat. no. 3302.0).

Data cubes containing death and mortality statistics under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) will be released and become available electronically from the Downloads tab of this publication on the ABS website on Thursday, 15 November 2012 (see Table 20: Deaths, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4, 2006 to 2011 and Table 21: Deaths, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2, 2006 to 2011).

State, Territory and Australia Life tables (cat. nos. 3302.0.55.001 to 3302.8.55.001) previously released in association with this product as individual data cubes have been withdrawn. These data have been consolidated into one data cube and are now released via the product Life tables, States, Territories and Australia, 2009-2011 (cat. no. 3302.0.55.001).

Commentary in this publication has been reduced to main features. All previously released data cubes have been retained.

CHANGES IN FUTURE ISSUES

Death rates for 2007 to 2011 will be revised using the final estimated resident population by age and sex based on the results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing in the 2012 issue of this publication (to be released in November 2013).

ROUNDING

Calculations as shown in the commentary sections of this publication are based on unrounded figures. Calculations using rounded figures may differ from those published.

All data are affected by errors in reporting and processing. Death registration data are also affected by delays in registration.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The efforts of Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages to improve the data quality, coverage and timeliness of death registration information, processes and systems are noted and valued by the ABS.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Where necessary, tables have had small values suppressed or randomised to protect confidentiality. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals.
