NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This issue contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex as at 30 June 2001 to 30 June 2011. Estimates are provided for Statistical Areas Level 2 to 4 (SA2s - SA4s), Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSAs), Local Government Areas (LGAs), and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

Estimates for Statistical Local Areas, Statistical Subdivisions and Statistical Divisions (SDs) according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) are also included.

The commentary in this issue focuses on the age and sex distribution of populations at the SA2 level and above as well as changes to these distributions over ten years (2001 - 2011). All ASGS-based and ASGC-based estimates are available from the Downloads tab.

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island and Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES

The estimates in this issue are final for 2001 to 2006 and preliminary rebased for 2007 to 2011 (denoted 2007pr - 2011pr), based on results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Preliminary total population estimates for ASGS regions as at June 2012 are scheduled for release on 30 April 2013 in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 3218.0).

Final 2011 Census-based estimates for 2007 to 2011 are scheduled for release in August 2013. Totals will be added to Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 3218.0) and age/sex breakdowns will be added to the Downloads tab in this product.

ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using Census data, mathematical modelling and population-weighted geographical correspondences and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations.

In recognition of the inherent inaccuracy involved in population estimation, areas with a total population of less than 1,000 people at 30 June 2011 have been excluded from commentary in this product.

In commentary based on statistics in this product, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

This issue includes the first release of official population estimates by age and sex based on the ASGS. It is also the last issue that will include population estimates by age and sex based on the ASGC. New data cubes have been added which include population estimates by age and sex for SA2s, SA3s, SA4s and GCCSAs. Commentary in this product no longer focus on LGAs and SDs, but SA2 level and above.

FUTURE CHANGES IN THIS PRODUCT

This will be the last issue to include population estimates by age and sex based on the ASGC. Sub-state population estimates from 30 June 2012 will only be prepared and released based at the SA2 level (and above). LGA estimates will continue to be prepared and released.
