FINAL POPULATION ESTIMATES FOR 2001-06 INTERCENSAL PERIOD

After each Census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) uses the new information to rebase the estimated resident population (ERP) of Australia, its states and territories and smaller 'sub-state' areas such as Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) and Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The 2006 Census of Population and Housing (2006 Census) has been used to construct a new base population figure for 30 June 2006. This new base is used to update the original series of published national, state and territory quarterly population estimates from 30 September 2001 to 30 June 2006 and annual sub-state estimates from 30 June 2002 to 30 June 2006 (the previous intercensal period).

Final Australian, state and territory ERPs for the 2001-06 intercensal period were released on 24th June 2008 in Australian Demographic Statistics, Dec 2007 (cat. no. 3101.0) along with a feature article describing the methods used to prepare final rebased ERPs. Final Australian, state and territory ERPs by age and sex for June 2002 to June 2006 were released in Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories, Jun 2002 to Jun 2007, (cat. no. 3201.0).

Final SLA and LGA ERPs for the 2001-06 intercensal period were released on 19th August 2008. Excel spreadsheets and a Supertable data cube containing final SLA and LGA ERP totals as at 30 June each year from 1996 to 2006 were added to Regional Population Growth, 1996 to 2006 (cat. no. 3218.0). The totals included there for 2002 to 2006, and the 2007 totals included in the spreadsheets published in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2007 (cat. no. 3235.0) on 19th August 2008, supersede those published in March 2008 in Regional Population Growth, 2006-07 (cat. no. 3218.0). A Supertable data cube containing the age and sex breakdowns of final SLA and LGA ERPs as at 30 June in 1996, 2001 and 2006 was added to Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 3235.0) on 19th August 2008.

In addition to the ERPs that are freely available on the ABS web site, data for other reference dates, geographic areas and age groups can be obtained on request.
