FINAL REBASED POPULATION ESTIMATES

This issue contains final rebased Estimated Resident Population data based on the 2016 Census of Population and Housing for the September 2011 - June 2016 period. Data for September 2016 onwards is preliminary. For more information see Explanatory Note 7.


REVIEW OF NET OVERSEAS MIGRATION STATISTICS

Due to the discontinuation of the outgoing passenger card by the Department of Home Affairs, the ABS has reviewed its net overseas migration (NOM) statistics, methodology and processing systems. NOM statistics from the September quarter 2011 onwards have been revised in this issue based on the new methods. The new methods mean that final estimates of NOM will be available four quarters after the reference period rather than the previous five quarters. As a result, two quarters of final NOM have been released in this issue, and NOM is now final up to the December quarter 2016. For more information see Explanatory Note 16.


CHANGES TO POPULATION BY AGE AND SEX, REGIONS OF AUSTRALIA (CAT. NO. 3235.0)

As with sub-state population totals, age and sex breakdowns for 30 June 2017 and onward will be prepared using a component-based methodology. That is, estimates by age and sex will be updated from the previous year's estimates by adding natural increase and net internal and overseas migration by age and sex. To accommodate this change in methodology, the release of sub-state ERP by age and sex as at 30 June 2017 will now be released on 28 September 2018. The product in which estimates will be released will have the new title of Regional Population by Age and Sex, Australia (cat. no. 3235.0) however the content will remain much the same as the previous issues of Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia (cat. no. 3235.0). Regional internal migration estimates by age and sex will also be released in this product.

Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2016 (cat. no. 3235.0) - Final 2012 to 2016 age and sex estimates to be released 31 August.

Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2016-17 (cat. no. 3218.0) - Updated 2017 population estimates to be released 31 August 2018.

Regional Population by Age and Sex, Australia, 2017 (cat. no. 3235.0) - Preliminary 2017 age and sex estimates to be released 28 September 2018.
