The proportion of businesses that reported the abandonment of at least one type of innovative activity was 6%. With the exception of businesses with 0-4 persons employed (6%), all other employment size ranges recorded abandoned innovative activity at 8%.

New goods or services and new marketing methods were the most commonly reported types of abandoned innovative activity as at 30 June 2009 (both 3%). This was followed by new operational processes and new organisational/managerial processes (both 2%).

At industry level, the highest proportion of abandoned innovative activity was reported by businesses in Manufacturing (11%), while the lowest was by businesses in Mining, Electricity, gas, water and waste services and Administrative and support services (all 4%).

The highest proportion of businesses reporting abandoned innovative activity related to the development of new goods and services and new organisational/managerial methods (6% and 4% respectively) were from the Manufacturing industry. Businesses in Financial and insurance services were the most likely to report having abandoned new marketing methods and new operational processes (6% and 4% respectively).
