UPCOMING ABS STATISTICAL TRAINING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA


TRAINING CALENDAR

To assist in developing statistical expertise, the ABS can provide training courses to your staff. Our training programs are conducted by ABS staff with expertise in designing questionnaires, analysing data and managing the survey process. Courses can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation, for example using South Australia-specific information, with the aim of upskilling people in the access, use, interpretation and collection of statistical information.

The ABS also provides regular seminars and information sessions which may focus on statistical developments, publications, trends or issues. The following training is currently scheduled for the Adelaide (SA) office between March and June 2009.


CDATA Online - FREE Seminar

Date: 07/04/09

Duration: 1.5 hours 9:30am - 11:00am

Description: This seminar will introduce participants to CDATA online. CDATA Online is a free web-based product that allows you to create your own tables of Census data on a range of different topics such as: age, education, housing, income, transport, religion, ethnicity, occupation and more. All Census geographies are available, from a single Collection District to an entire State/Territory or total Australia. You are able to create your own custom groups and areas, and can view your Census data in tables, graphs and maps.

Who should attend: Suitable for a range of users, including government, business and community groups, researchers and information professionals

Accessing ABS Information - FREE Seminar

Date: 31/03/09, 29/04/09, 03/06/09

Duration: 1.5 hours 9:30am - 11:00am

Description: ABS on-line publications and data are free to download from the ABS web site, www.abs.gov.au, and this information seminar aims to increase awareness of the content of the ABS web site. The seminar also covers access to and content of ABS@SAGov, which is available to South Australian State Government employees and contains unpublished data commissioned by South Australian State Government agencies, announcements and other content of interest to state government users of ABS services.

Who should attend: Suitable for a range of new and existing users of the ABS web site and would be a valuable introduction to ABS data for those considering undertaking other ABS courses.

Analysing Survey Data Made Simple - Workshop

Date: 01/04/09 - 02/04/09

Duration: 2 days

Description: This two-day, computer-based course develops basic practical skills in statistical and graphical data analysis techniques using Microsoft Excel.

Who should attend: Those with little or no knowledge of statistical analysis techniques who need a basic understanding of how to analyse and describe data that has been collected in surveys. Please note this is not a course in how to use Excel - previous spreadsheet experience is recommended.

Cost: $750 (inc. GST)


Turning Data Into Information - Workshop

Date: 13/05/09 - 14/05/09

Duration: 2 days

Description: This two-day course is intended to provide skills in interpreting, communicating and displaying data clearly and effectively. Participants will gain skills in transforming data into meaningful written information, particularly in respect to social policy issues.

Who should attend: This course will be most beneficial to people who need to use data to produce reports or social commentary, or people who are involved with monitoring and evaluation in a social context.

Cost: $750 (inc. GST)


Principals of Questionnaire Design - Workshop

Date: 16/06/09 - 17/06/09

Duration: 2 days

Description: A well designed questionnaire is vital for collecting high quality data. The aim of this course is to provide participants with an awareness and understanding of questionnaire design principles. The course covers selecting collection methodologies, developing survey questions, designing questionnaire layout and testing the questionnaire.

Who should attend: People who will be involved in designing and conducting a survey and wish to gain an understanding of how to design a questionnaire that will collect data accurately.

Cost: $750 (inc. GST)


Valuing Australia's Environment

Date: 19/06/09

Duration: 1 day

Description: This course provides an introduction to the notion of environmental accounts, including insight into their compilation and uses. The course covers the frameworks that underpin environmental accounting; the various types of environmental accounts and what they measure; the processes, frameworks and classifications involved in compiling environmental accounts and the various uses and users of environmental accounts.

Who should attend: Those seeking an introduction to environmental accounting. Both statisticians and data users with an interest in the environment may find the course valuable.

Cost: $450 (inc. GST)
