EDUCATION

Measuring Socioeconomic and Language Background of School Students. The ABS National Centre for Education and Training Statistics is coordinating a study commissioned by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) to test the feasibility of collecting information about students' socioeconomic status, socioeconomic disadvantage and language background other than English on school enrolment forms. The study is being conducted in Victoria and the Northern Territory with assistance from education departments in both States. The ABS will gauge feasibility by the accuracy of the data collected and the burden of collection on systems, schools and parents. On completion, the ABS will report to MCEETYA.
