In this issue
Welcome to the May issue of Microdata News. There have been some exciting new developments since our last issue.
Foremost I would like to thank Kim Farley-Larmour, who after five years at the helm of Microdata Access Strategies has moved on to another exciting new challenge as a Specialist in the National Centre for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Statistics. Kim's hard work and leadership is a testament to the team she has left behind and I wish her well in her new endeavour. I know she will be missed by the team.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the readers of Microdata News. My name is John D Moore. I have been at the ABS for nearly 29 years, mostly in Canberra with a long stint in Melbourne and shorter postings to Darwin and to Statistics NZ where I worked on the 1996 NZ Census of Population and Housing. My background is in Information Technology, but I am relishing my newfound responsibility for the dissemination of customised data and microdata.
I am also in the final stages of my PhD, which used microdata from the 2006 Australian Census of Population and Housing to develop predictive models of respondent behaviour. This academic research has driven home to me the richness of ABS microdata, as well as the importance of confidentiality and privacy when dealing with unit record information.
Advances in technology and the demands of decision makers for data to explain and predict a rapidly changing world are two factors that are driving the importance of microdata in the research community. I am looking forward to meeting your requirements in a timely and secure manner. To assist me in this aspiration I would appreciate any feedback that you have, as well as any examples where ABS microdata has helped (or hindered) your research. My contact details are set out below.
Once again, I would like to thank Kim for all her hard work. I hope I can maintain, with your help, our microdata service.
