INTRODUCTION

Tourism may be motivated by the desire to visit friends and relatives or to experience the character and culture of a destination. Tourism Research Australia (TRA) conducts the International Visitor Survey (IVS) and the National Visitor Survey (NVS). The IVS represents the most comprehensive source of information on international visitors to Australia. The NVS is the major source of information on the characteristics and travel patterns of domestic tourists within Australia. TRA uses information from these two sources to produce the snapshots publication Cultural and Heritage Tourism in Australia.

Both the IVS and NVS are ongoing collections and were conducted again in 2010. However, due to internal changes in release schedules, a Cultural and Heritage Tourism in Australia snapshot for 2010 was not compiled. As a result the information provided in this chapter presents a profile of international and domestic visitors who participated in cultural and heritage activities in 2009.

It is anticipated that the next snapshot will be prepared using information from the 2011 IVS and NVS and available in the first half of 2012.
