At 30 June 2014:

• The median age of Australian prisoners was 34 years of age. The median age of male and female prisoners was similar (34.0 years for males and 34.5 years for females). (Table 1)


• Prisoners with a most serious offence/charge of sexual assault had the highest median age (44.4 years), followed by prisoners with a most serious offence/charge of fraud, deception and related offences (41.5 years). Prisoners with a most serious offence/charge of robbery, extortion had the lowest median age (28.5 years). (Table 1)


• Persons aged 25 to 29 years had the highest imprisonment rate (348.6 prisoners per 100,000 persons aged 25 to 29), closely followed by persons aged 30 to 34 years (346.5 prisoners per 100,000 persons aged 30 to 34 years). (Table 3)


• Adult prisoners aged 24 years or under accounted for 18% of the total Australian adult prisoner population (5,982 prisoners). The most common offence for adult prisoners aged 24 years or under was acts intended to cause injury (28% or 1,654 prisoners) followed by robbery and extortion (18% or 1,057 prisoners). (Tables 3 & 5)


• Persons aged 65 years and over had the lowest imprisonment rate (20.7 prisoners per 100,000 persons aged 65 years and over), accounting for 2% (708 prisoners) of the total Australian prisoner population. Over half of all prisoners aged 65 years and over (54% or 381 prisoners) had a most serious offence/charge of sexual assault and related offences. (Tables 3 & 5)
