TYPE OF ACCESS CONNECTION

TYPE OF ACCESS CONNECTION

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked to report subscriber numbers by type of access connection as at 31 December 2011.

There were 11.6 million internet subscribers in Australia at the end of December 2011. This represents annual growth of 11.0% and an increase of 6.3% since the end of June 2011.

The phasing out of dial-up internet connections continued with 96% of internet connections being broadband.

Mobile wireless internet connections continued to be the fastest growing internet technology in terms of actual subscriber numbers, increasing by 14.7% since June 2011, and was again the most prevalent internet technology in Australia.

Although Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections grew by 1.3% to 4.6 million in the six months ending December 2011, the percentage share of DSL continued to decline, accounting for 39% of access connections.

In December 2011, the number of satellite connections decreased by 6.0% compared to June 2011 to 100,000 subscribers. While fibre subscriber numbers were still relatively small (37,000), the number increased by 18.3% in the same period.
