REVIEW OF SCOPE OF THE CORRECTIVE SERVICES AUSTRALIA PUBLICATION:

The ABS has commenced a review of the scope of the Corrective Services, Australia (cat. no. 4512.0) publication, which presents national data on the nature and number of persons in corrective services custody and serving community-based orders. The publication is compiled from administrative data supplied to the ABS by the state and territory corrective services agencies.

The ABS recognises that information is a key commodity for the twenty-first century and that demands for statistical information support the needs of evidence-based policy making, performance monitoring and evaluation requirements. Responding to these growing demands the ABS is currently reviewing the scope of the corrective services statistical collection, to ensure that it remains relevant to emerging needs going forward.

The aim of the review is to ensure the corrective services statistical collection is relevant and can support the needs of the decision-makers who use the data. The first phase of consultations is underway seeking to identify any gaps in the data as currently collected, particularly those relating to critical information needs. The responses will help to determine the future directions of national corrective services statistics. It is expected that the review will be completed by late 2012, and any recommended actions following completion of the review are expected to be implemented in stages from early 2013.
