Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked to report subscriber numbers as at 31 December 2011, according to whether they were classified as Business and government, or Household sector subscribers.

Of the 11.6 million internet subscribers in Australia, 77% are classified as Household subscribers while 23% are Business and government subscribers.

Business and government subscribers increased by 20.6% from June 2011 to 2.7 million, while Household subscribers increased by 2.7% to 8.9 million.

For the Business and government sector, the proportion of subscribers using broadband increased to 96% compared with 95% in June 2011. Similarly, the proportion of Household subscribers using broadband increased to 96% compared with 95% in June 2011.

(a) ISPs may reclassify their subscribers from Business and government to Household, or vice versa, or they may report proportions in lieu of actual numbers which may impact upon the reported figures. Readers are advised to use these figures with caution.
(b) Dial-up and broadband figures by sector are collected by advertised download speeds, therefore these data may not equal figures reported for type of access connection, due to some broadband connections being reported as less than 256kbps.
