CULTURAL FUNDING BY GOVERNMENT

This report presents an overview of expenditure on cultural activities funded by the Western Australian Government. The data used in this report are available in the data cube for Western Australia attached to Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 4183.0) on the ABS website.

In 2011-12, the estimate of cultural expenditure funded by the Western Australian Government was $614.4m or 19% of total cultural expenditure funded by state and territory governments. Expenditure rose 10% in 2011-12 which followed a rise of 8% in 2010-11. Recurrent expenses accounted for 75% of the Western Australian Government cultural expenditure. The estimate of per person expenditure by the Western Australian Government was $257.10.

Total cultural expenditure funded by the Western Australian Government has increased 44% from $425.5m in 2007-08 to $614.4m in 2011-12.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of Western Australian Government funds on Heritage activities increased by 15% to $483.5m. Environmental heritage accounted for 60% of the increase in expenditure, with a rise of 12% ($36.6m) on 2010-11. This category represented 69% of expenditure on Heritage activities. Other museums and cultural heritage expenditure also rose (30% or $16.5.m) in 2011-12.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of Western Australian Government funds for Arts activities fell 3% to $130.9m. The largest fall was for Design from $21.8m in 2010-11 to $5.5m in 2011-12 (down 75%). Expenditure on Other arts rose 47% from $24.0m in 2010-11 to $35.2m and accounted for 27% of all Arts expenditure in 2011-12.
