WEAPON USE

In 2012, a weapon was used against the victim in the majority of murder and attempted murder offences (68% or 173 offences and 77% or 123 offences respectively). This is in contrast to sexual assault (96% or 17,475 offences) and kidnapping/abduction (84% or 537 offences) in which no weapon was used in the majority of offences. No weapon was used in just over half (52% or 6,878 offences) of robbery offences.

When a weapon was used committing a murder, a knife (29% or 73 offences) was the weapon used more often than a firearm (17% or 44 offences). Conversely, a firearm (35% or 55 offences) was used in committing attempted murder offences more often than a knife (29% or 46 offences).
