In 2011-12:

NATIONAL AND STATE/TERRITORY
  • Approximately 51,000 agricultural businesses (38%) reported undertaking some level of cultivation on their holding, covering 15.8 million hectares of agricultural land. Western Australia reported the largest area of land being cultivated (5.2 million hectares) by approximately 5,600 agricultural businesses.
  • Around 31,500 of agricultural businesses (62% of cultivating businesses) undertook one cultivation on approximately 11.2 million hectares across Australia. 5 million hectares in Western Australia had one cultivation, followed by 2.3 million hectares in New South Wales.
  • New South Wales had the highest reported area for multiple cultivations. Around 1.1 million hectares of land was cultivated twice, and 782,000 hectares had three cultivations in the state.

AUSTRALIAN AGRICULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS (AAE)
  • The greatest number of agricultural businesses undertaking cultivating pasture and crops were located in the Wheatbelt East region. More than 10,000 agricultural businesses cultivated over 2.9 million hectares of land land in that region.
  • 60% of agricultural businesses in the Wheatbelt West region undertook cultivating pasture and crops, the highest proportion of any AAE in Australia (see map below).
  • Agricultural businesses in the Wheatbelt West region had the greatest area of land cultivated, with around 4 million hectares in total. Agricultural businesses in the Wheatbelt West region also had the highest proportion of land cultivated, with around 30% of the total region area having some level of cultivation undertaken.
