Climate Change

The term 'climate change' was left to the respondent's interpretation. If the respondent sought clarification, interviewers were instructed to tell the respondent that 'climate change includes global warming'.

Energy efficiency

The amount of energy used by an appliance, as indicated by the star rating label.

Environmental problems

The term 'environmental problems' was left to the respondent's interpretation.

Garden waste

Includes lawn clippings, pruning bushes, leaves and weeds.

Household waste

All types of waste generated by everyday household activities such as general rubbish, recycling materials, kitchen waste and packaging.

Recyclable waste

Recyclable waste refers to anything that can be recycled e.g. paper, plastic, glass, cardboard.

Recycle - garden waste

This refers to putting garden waste to another use e.g. turning into compost or mulch, putting into a green waste bin etc.

Recycle - kitchen or food waste

This refers to putting kitchen or food waste to another use e.g. putting into compost or a worm farm, feeding to animals.

Recycled or grey water

Recycled or grey water refers to water that is collected or saved after being used in the household, so that it can be reused in another way.

Renewable energy

The term 'renewable energy' was left to the respondent's interpretation.

Water efficiency

The amount of water used by an appliance, as indicated by the star rating label.

Water restrictions

Restrictions on either the type of use (e.g. using the hose), purpose of use (e.g. watering the garden), or the days and times on which water can be used. Restrictions can be imposed by water suppliers or water authorities.
