Preface PREFACE

This directory has been produced to improve user awareness of statistical information in the field of Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) and ultimately its use in informing
decision-making. It complements the Conceptual Framework for Family and Domestic Violence, Australia, 2009 (ABS, cat. no. 4529.0) and aims to provide a single multi-disciplinary reference point containing information about data sources across the health, welfare, family and community services and crime and justice sectors.

The information contained in this Directory has been collected from, and in collaboration with, many data custodian organisations and individual researchers and collection managers. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has endeavoured to ensure that the information contained about data sources is accurate. However readers are advised to confirm information about data availability and methodology directly with the data source contacts listed in the Directory. If you are aware that changes to any of the information are required please send them to the ABS via the contact details on the Updates to this directory page.

While this Directory aims to provide a wide range of FDV statistics collected by, or on behalf of, Governments, it is not an exhaustive list of all sources of FDV-related information. Some agencies and departments that collect information about FDV victims, perpetrators, incidents and support programs, have not been included in this Directory for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • the information collected is not available for statistical use;
  • data cannot be readily extracted in an aggregated, de-identified format; and
  • data are not considered by the agency to be sufficiently robust or complete to be used for statistical purposes.

The focus of this directory is on Australian Government and State and Territory Government agencies only. Whilst local councils and non-government organisations deliver many FDV programs and services, funding for these functions is generally provided through arrangements with Australian and State and Territory Governments. It is acknowledged that the non-government sector, particularly FDV service providers, and academic researchers also have rich data sources that can inform this field, however, the aim of this directory is to bring together information about government data sources.

I would like to thank the organisations who took the time and effort to contribute information for this directory.

Brian Pink
Australian Statistician
