Principal sentence

During 2012–13, 487,856 defendants were proven guilty, of which:

  • 89% were given a non-custodial order (primarily monetary orders); and
  • 11% were given a custodial order.

Of the 54,889 defendants (11%) given a custodial order:
  • 59% were sentenced to custody in a correctional institution;
  • 37% were sentenced to fully suspended sentences; and
  • 5% were sentenced to custody in the community. (Table 6)

The proportion sentenced to a custodial order remained stable compared with 2011–12. (Table 2)
