Includes historical commentary - see January 2013 release of Gender Indicators, Australia (cat. no. 4125.0).
^ Series has been updated in this release.
^^ 2011-12 data have been updated for this release of Gender Indicators, Australia as additional sample from the Australian Health Survey has become available. Data for 2011-12 are now final.
(age std) Rates have been age standardised in 5 year ranges to 75 years and over to the Estimated Resident Population (ERP) as at 30 June 2001.

(a) When financial activities of the household are constrained by shortage of money. The specific financial activities could be: went without meals; could not afford to heat home; could not pay electricity, gas or telephone bills on time etc.
(b) A household is considered to be in rental stress if its rental costs exceed 30 per cent of its gross income.
(c) Males and females aged 15 years and over, living in low income households in rental stress as a proportion of total population for each sex in the lowest two income quintiles of Equivalised Disposable Household Income.
(d) Levels 1 and 2 are the two lowest measured levels of literacy and Levels 4 and 5 are the two highest measured levels.
(e) Includes persons enrolled in formal or non-formal learning.
(f) Those not fully engaged in education and/or employment are those who in the survey reference week were: not studying or working (and therefore unemployed or not in the labour force); were studying part-time and not working (therefore unemployed or not in the labour force); or were not studying but were in part-time work.
(g) Perinatal deaths are all fetal deaths (at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight) plus all neonatal deaths (death of a live born baby within 28 completed days of birth). As male deaths include those perinatal deaths of sex indeterminate, only the total rate is presented.
(h) Perinatal death rates are calculated per 1,000 all births for the calendar year.
(i) Based on 2009 by the National Health Medical Research Council in Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol. The 2009 guidelines align the definition of what constitutes 'risky' alcohol consumption for males and females. That is, the consumption of more than two standard drinks per day by either a male or female, presents a risk over that individual's 'lifetime'.
(j) Based on measured height and weight.
(k) In the last week.
(l) In Queensland, includes persons aged 17 years and over.
