NAME OF COLLECTION

National Mortality Database

OVERVIEW

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare National Mortality Database contains cause of death information for all deaths registered in Australia since 1964. The information comes from the Registrars of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The data are collated and coded (to an international standard for cause of death) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The AIHW use these data in various reporting activities to monitor the health of Australians and to inform policy and planning. Summaries of causes of death, including trends and deaths among different population groups, can be derived from this long term dataset.
