FREQUENCY OF VIOLENCE

For persons who had experienced violence by a partner, information was collected about whether they had experienced more than one incident of violence by their current partner or most recently violent previous partner since the age of 15 (Refer Table 22).

Women who had experienced violence by a previous partner were more likely than men to have experienced more than one incident. There was no difference in the estimated proportion of men and women who experienced more than one incident of violence by a current partner (Refer Table 22).

Current partner

  • An estimated 77,800 men (65% of the 119,600 men who had experienced current partner violence) had experienced more than one incident of violence by their current partner.
  • An estimated 154,500 women (65% of the 237,100 women who had experienced current partner violence) had experienced more than one incident of violence by their current partner.

Previous partner
  • An estimated 170,100 men (51% of the 336,300 men who had experienced previous partner violence) had experienced more than one incident of violence by their most recently violent previous partner.
  • An estimated 925,100 women (73% of the 1,267,200 women who had experienced previous partner violence) had experienced more than one incident of violence by their most recently violent previous partner.
