INCOME

Total income for private Acute and psychiatric hospitals in Australia has increased by 8.8% between 2009-10 and 2010-11 to $9,838 million. Victorian hospitals recorded the strongest growth of 10.2%, to record the highest income of the states and territories at $2,613 million, just ahead of New South Wales with $2,600 million.

The proportion of total income contributed by patient income has fallen from 96.0% to 95.5%, with the largest decrease occurring in Victoria (down 2.2 percentage points to 94.8%).

The Other Not for profit sector recorded the largest percentage increase in total income, with an 18.3% increase to $316 million, reflecting the 13.6% increase in the number of beds in this sector.

The proportion of total income contributed by patient income ranged from 93.5% for Religious or charitable Not for profit hospitals (down from 94.5% in 2009-10) to 97.2% for For profit hospitals (down from 97.3% in 2009-10).

Large hospitals, with over 200 beds, had highest income for 2010-11 at $4,229 million (43.0% of all hospitals' income), an average of $169 million per hospital. Hospitals with 101-200 beds earned the second highest income at $3,141 million (31.9% of all hospitals' income), an average of $56 million per hospital.

Patient income as a proportion of total income was relatively similar across hospital sizes, in all except the smallest of private acute and psychiatric hospitals for 2010-11. Hospitals offering 25 or fewer beds received 91.3% of their income as patient income.
