Barley and wheat are the main cereal crops grown in South Australia. Barley is used primarily for stockfeed and malting purposes and on a small scale for human consumption. In 2006-07, South Australian farmers produced 996,000 tonnes of barley and over 60% came from the Yorke-Lower North and Eyre Statistical Divisions.

Wheat growing in South Australia is dependent on receiving adequate rainfall in the planting and growing periods from April to November. In 2006-07, wheat production was 1.4 million tonnes. Over 65% of all wheat produced in South Australia in 2006-07 came from the Yorke-Lower North and Eyre Statistical Divisions.
