Definition of Family and Domestic Violence

IVAWS defines violence as including physical violence, including threats, sexual violence, including unwanted sexual touching and psychological violence, or controlling behaviours such as insults, humiliation, put-downs, restrictions of freedom and constant surveillance.

Family and Domestic Violence is defined based on the reported relationship between the victim and offender to include current and previous intimate partners and other relatives (father, step-father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, or some other male relative).

Aspects of FDP captured in the data are:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Psychological /emotional abuse
  • Verbal abuse

Collection methodology

Women were randomly selected using the ‘White Pages plus 1’ method to include not yet listed and unlisted numbers. Interviews were conducted by telephone during 2002-2003. Data collection was conducted by Roy Morgan Research. One woman per household was selected using the ‘next birthday’ method.

The IVAWS sample has been weighted to represent all females aged between 18 and 69 in the population by age and geographic area. Of the 17,247 households that were contacted by telephone, 6,677 women were interviewed in the IVAWS resulting in an effective participation rate of 39 per cent.

Scope / target population

Women aged between 18 and 69 years in Australia living in a private household.

Coverage

Those suffering illness or disability, deaf or otherwise unable to respond to telephone, including those without a landline, were excluded. Homeless women and those living in group facilities or institutions were also excluded.
