LABOUR FORCE
For the purpose of Labour Force Survey, the currently economically active population is referred to as the labour force. The labour force (the sum of the total number of employed and the total number of unemployed persons) is defined so as to be conceptually equivalent to the pool of labour available for the production of economic goods and services (as defined for System of National Accounts purposes), during a specified (short) reference period (e.g. one week). LABOUR FORCE STATUS
Labour Force Status is a classification of the civilian population aged 15 years and over into the labour force (those employed or unemployed) or into not in the labour force, as defined. The definitions conform closely to the international standard definitions adopted by the International Conferences of Labour Statisticians. For detailed description see Labour Statistics: Concepts, Sources and Methods (cat. no. 6102.0).
This variable identifies, for the reference week, a person’s labour force status.

Persons not in the labour force are those
people who, during the reference week, were not in the categories Employed or Unemployed. They include people who were keeping house (unpaid), retired, voluntarily inactive, permanently unable to work, in gaol, trainee teachers, members of contemplative religious orders, and persons whose only activity during the reference week was jury service or unpaid voluntary work for a charitable organisation.
