Broad Description
Social and demographic characteristics of union members and non-union members, who are employees in their main job.

Purpose of Data
Provides a comparison of union members and non-members. Characteristics of labour force participation are also provided.

Detailed Description
Population
All employees, aged 15 and over, who were wage and salary earners in a main job. Persons on workers compensation are excluded.
Superannuation Data Items
Persons covered and not covered by a superannuation scheme and the source of the superannuation scheme. Other data items include: gender, age, sector, whether a member of a trade union, weekly earnings, industry and occupation.

This survey is conducted by the ABS as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey.

Method of Collection
The Labour Force Survey is dwellings-based and covers about three-fifths of one percent of the population of Australia. The information is obtained from the occupants of selected dwellings by trained interviewers. Additional questions relating to special topics are asked of those who fall within the scope of the supplementary survey.

Frequency
Biennially.

Timeliness
6 months after the reference period.

Historical Data
Similar surveys were conducted in March-May 1982, August 1986, August 1988, August 1990, August 1992, August 1994 and August 1996. Results from this survey will be published again in August 1998.

Geographic Breakdown
Data are available for Australia, each State and Territory and for certain regions within each State.

Confidentiality and Availability
Tables compiled from ABS household surveys do not enable individual respondents to be identified. As a result, a wide range of customised tables can be produced.
