DESCRIPTION

MCEETYA's report 'Demand and Supply of Primary and Secondary School Teachers in Australia' investigates the main characteristics of the labour market for teachers. It provides a comprehensive overview of national teacher supply and demand issues for both the government and non-government sectors. The report uses international examples of labour markets and recruitment policies and analyses the long-term trends emerging in Australia's supply and demand issues of teachers and the likelihood of future teacher shortages.

The report incorporates published data, qualitative research on teachers and principals, complementary research involving a series of research papers on various topics such as ageing of the teacher workforce, gender trends and teacher salaries; and a literature review incorporating Australian and international research.

Background

This publication was produced following recommendations from the 1997 Conference of Education Systems Chief Executive Officers (CESCEO) to put procedures in place that enable regular monitoring and reporting on the labour market for teachers. The first two reports were prepared by the then Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs in conjunction with the Working Party on Supply and Demand for Teachers. The consideration of issues around the supply and demand for teachers now falls under the terms of reference of the Teacher Quality and Educational Leadership Taskforce (TQELT). The 2003 report was prepared by DEST and the TQELT Teacher Supply and Demand Working Group.
