THE CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA

12. The criterion used in classifying units in the classification is the time unit 'year'.

THE STANDARD CLASSIFICATION AND CODE STRUCTURE

13. 'Year non-school qualification completed' is a flat classification having only one level.

14. The standard classification has a four-digit code structure which directly relates to calendar years. The code structure is the same as the years themselves.

Residual categories and codes

15. Not applicable.

Supplementary codes

16. Supplementary codes are used to process inadequately described responses, non-responses, responses which are not applicable or out of scope of the classification, and other responses. The simplest type of supplementary code occurs for categories like 'Not stated/inadequately described'. When coding to the four-digit level, the supplementary code for 'Not stated/inadequately described' is 0002. For any application where coding is to a two-digit level only, a supplementary code such as @@ should be user-defined.

17. The supplementary code for responses of 'Prior to 1980' is 1111.

SCOPE OF THE CLASSIFICATION

18. The Classification conceptually includes all years prior to and including the survey collection year.

APPLICATION OF THE CLASSIFICATION TO OTHER VARIABLES

19. The 'Year non-school qualification completed' classification is not applicable to any other variable.

CODING PROCEDURES

20. Responses to the 'Year non-school qualification completed' question are stored as four-digit calendar years. Responses of 'Prior to 1980' (if collected) are coded to 1111. The 'Year non-school qualification completed' classification does not require a coding index.
