ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents financial performance and production activity results from the Film, Television and Digital Games Survey. This collection was funded by Screen Australia and was conducted in respect of the 2015-16 reference year. This is the seventh time the ABS has conducted some form of this collection, and the third time that digital game development has been included after its introduction in 2006-07. Previous statistics were released for the 2011-12, 2006-07, 2002-03, 1999-2000, 1996-97 and 1993-94 financial years. The scope of the survey includes businesses primarily engaged in any of the following activities:

  • the production or post-production of film, television and video
  • the development of digital games
  • the broadcasting of programs or provision of television channels

The survey measures three distinct types of activity for these businesses:
  • Financial activity - including measures of the sources of income, components of expenditure, profit and contribution to the overall economy
  • Production activity - including the amount of production activity undertaken by program type during the 2015-16 reference period
  • Employment activity - including total levels at end June 2016, as well as the characteristics of employees

More detailed estimates are included in the data cube tables accompanying this publication on the ABS website.

Where applicable analysis and comparisons have been made to 2011-12 estimates, published as part of Film, Television and Digital Games Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 8679.0), however no revisions were applied to the data. Users should exercise caution in making their own comparisons over the 2011-12 to 2015-16 period. Please note all financial estimates are expressed in current prices.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The 2015-16 Film, Television and Digital Games Survey includes a change in description when compared against the previous iteration of this collection, published in the 2011-12 issue.
  • Due to the recent emergence of businesses primarily engaged in broadcasting over the internet this group have been included in Subscription broadcasters and channel providers however were excluded from the 2011-12 Film, Television and Digital Games Survey.
  • Web series were previously called Webisodes in 2011-2012. The description change is a reflection of the ongoing changes to online content creation and better describes the type of information that was collected in 2015-16.

Full details of the changes can be found in Explanatory Notes, paragraphs 43-44.
