STATE AND TERRITORY CONTRIBUTION TO RETAIL INDUSTRY(a), 2012-13

RETAIL INDUSTRY

New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland dominated state and territory shares for employment, wages and salaries, and sales and service income during 2012–13. Combined, these states accounted for 76.9% (or 977,654 persons) of total employment at end June 2013, 77.7% (or $31.4b) of wages and salaries, and 76.9% (or $289.6b) of sales and service income. Comparatively, these states' population share combined were 76.9%. New South Wales paid the highest average wage ($33,342) per person employed in the Retail Industry followed by Northern Territory ($32,516) and Victoria ($32,254), above the industry average of $31,790.

WHOLESALE INDUSTRY

New South Wales contributed the largest share for employment (37.5% or 207,495 people), wages and salaries (39.7% or $13.8b), and sales and service income (32.7% or $159.7b) during 2012–13. However, for Basic material wholesaling and Motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts wholesaling, Victoria recorded greater share for key data items compared to New South Wales. Combined, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory contributed 2.5% (or 13,984 persons) to total employment, 2.4% (or $820.4m) to wages and salaries, and 2.3%($11.4b) to sales and service income. Australian Capital Territory paid the highest average wage ($75,831), above the industry average of $62,664, followed by New South Wales ($66,451) and Victoria ($61,588).


Endnote
Note that average wage per person employed have been calculated using total employment inclusive of working proprietors and partners of unincorporated businesses, however wages and salaries excludes the drawings of working proprietors. Also, wages and salaries have been calculated for the full financial year 2012–13, whereas employment is a point in time estimate at June 2013. Therefore, state and territory average wage should be used with caution.
