STATES AND TERRITORIES 2014-15

The figures in the commentary below relate to 2014-15 for all states and territories, and to the industry designated as 'Selected mining', that is, ANZSIC subdivisions 06-09 (Coal mining, Oil and gas extraction, Metal ore mining and Non-metallic mineral mining and quarrying) only. ANZSIC subdivision 10 (Exploration and other mining support services) is excluded. Data for the Australian Capital Territory are included with those for New South Wales and are not available separately. See Explanatory Notes for a link to the methodology used to derive these estimates.

SALES AND SERVICE INCOME

In 2014-15 sales and service income for the Selected mining industry decreased by 3.8% ($7.8b) to $195.5b. This reduction was dominated by Western Australia which fell 4.9% ($6.1b), followed by Victoria, which fell 33% ($2.2b). Western Australia remained the largest state with 59.9% of the total for Selected mining.

EMPLOYMENT

During 2014-15, 42.9% of employment (59,269 people) in the Selected mining industry was recorded against Western Australia, followed by Queensland with 28.7% (39,727 people). New South Wales contributed 17% (23,486 people). Employment for the Selected mining industry decreased by 3.1% (4,411 people), which was reflected in the reduction of 8.6% (2,203 people) in New South Wales and a 3.8% fall for Queensland (1,569 people).

WAGES AND SALARIES

In 2014-15, Western Australia accounted for 48.7% ($10.3b) of wages and salaries for the Selected mining industry, followed by Queensland at 26.3% ($5.5b) and New South Wales at 15% ($3.2b). Wages and salaries declined 2.7% for the Selected mining industry, a result which was reflected across nearly all states and territories.
