The publication provides an analysis of comparable findings using the data from the 2003 and 2005 Innovation Surveys. Innovation data from the 2005 survey has been collected on a two year basis. To enable the comparison of data from the 2003 and 2005 surveys, a modelling approach has been used to derive estimates for the year 2002 from the 2003 survey on a calendar year basis.

In the 2003 publication, a chapter was included outlining "Expenditure on Innovation". However, this issue does not include this chapter due to methodological issues.

This publication examines the patterns of innovation amongst Australian businesses using micro-level data from the ABS Innovation in Australian Business Survey 2005 (broad aggregate results from the survey are available from the ABS catalogue number 8158.0). It replicates an earlier analysis undertaken by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources in collaboration with the ABS, which used 2003 Innovation Survey data. This publication includes comparisons of the patterns of innovation from the 2003 and 2005 surveys.

This publication is the second of the series "Patterns of Innovation in Australian Businesses" (Catalogue number 8163.0)
