DESCRIPTION


The Government Finance Statistics provides the following education-related information for the General Government sector:

    • operating revenues, including student fees and charges
    • operating expenses
    • expenditure on non-financial assets (net)
    • Australian Government grants for education purposes.

Government operating expenses are classified by the Government Purpose Classification (GPC). This classification is used to group expenses with similar functions to facilitate the study of the broad purposes of public sector spending. Groupings related to education include:
    • Primary education
    • Secondary education
    • University education
    • Technical and further education
    • Tertiary education n.e.c.
    • Pre-school education
    • Special education
    • Other education not definable by level
    • Transportation of students.

Information on expenditure for the private sector is obtained from the Australian National Accounts.
