FACILITIES USED FOR SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

In 2011-12, the survey of Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation found that the most popular type of facilities used for sport and physical recreation activities were parks or reserves (40%). The next most popular facilities were indoor sports or fitness centres (37%). Schools or educational facilities were the least likely places that people participated in sport or physical recreation activities with only 9% of people reporting that they had used these facilities.

Public playing fields and ovals for sport or physical recreation, schools or educational facilities and outdoor sports facilities were most popular with people aged 15-17 years accounting for 53%, 51% and 42% of usage respectively. Indoor sport or fitness centres were most likely to be used by people aged 18-24 years (58%).

The facilities that were most popular with people who only participated in organised sports and physical recreation activities were indoor sports or fitness centres (45%) followed by public playing fields and ovals (35%). People who only participated in non-organised activities were most likely to use parks or reserves (42%) while most people who participated in both organised and non-organised activities used indoor sports or fitness centres (58%).
