PRISONER SNAPSHOT

At 30 June 2012 there were 29,383 prisoners (sentenced and unsentenced) in Australian prisons, an increase of 1% (277 prisoners) from 30 June 2011. This represented a national imprisonment rate of 168 prisoners per 100,000 adult population. The median aggregate sentence length for all sentenced prisoners was 3.2 years (38 months).

Unsentenced prisoners comprised 23% (6,871) of the total prisoner population, an increase of 2% (148) from 30 June 2011 (Table 2.2). Over half (55%) of all prisoners had served a sentence in an adult prison prior to the current episode. The most serious offence/charge of acts intended to cause injury accounted for the highest proportion of all prisoners (20% or 5,774). (Table 2.1)

Of the total prisoner population, 7% (2,201) were female and approximately eight in ten (80% or 23,586) were born in Australia. The median age of all prisoners was 34 years. (Table 2.1)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners comprised just over a quarter (27% or 7,982) of the total prisoner population. The age standardised imprisonment rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 1,914 per 100,000 adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. This was 15 times higher than non-Indigenous prisoners for whom the age standardised imprisonment rate was 129 per 100,000 adult non-Indigenous population. (Tables 2.1 and 3.3)
