SMOKING STATUS BY SEX

Health risks associated with smoking include cancers, respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and emphysema, and circulatory diseases including thrombosis and heart disease.

The 2004-05 National Health Survey indicated that, of Tasmanians aged 18 years and over:

  • 42.0% of the population have never smoked.
  • a higher proportion of males were daily smokers (26.4%), than females (22.0%).
  • a higher proportion of males were ex-smokers (36.5%) than females (28.4%).

SMOKER STATUS BY AGE

The smoking rate was highest among those Tasmanians in the age groups 18-24 years (32.1% were daily smokers) and 25-44 years (30.8% were daily smokers) and lowest among those Tasmanians aged 65 years and over (8.6% were daily smokers).
