1. Total income, also referred to as gross income, is the sum of income received from all sources before any deductions such as income tax, the Medicare Levy or salary sacrificed amounts are taken out. Total income is the most commonly used income measure across ABS household collections.

2. Total income at the household level is one of the core set of socio-demographic variables required to be included in all ABS Special Social (or supplementary) Surveys and the Multi-Purpose Household Surveys. It is also collected in the five-yearly Census of Population and Housing.

3. The conceptual definition of income is discussed in the 'Conceptual framework for income' which provides important background to this standard. In particular, it discusses related income concepts, broader measures of economic wellbeing and provides a glossary of relevant terminology.

4. Further information can be obtained by contacting the National Information and Referral Service on 1300 135 070 or by email to <client.services@abs.gov.au>.
