1 The ABS release Population, Australian States and Territories, September 2002, Electronic delivery contained final estimates of net undercount in the 2001 Census of Population and Housing. In the Census, some people are missed and some are counted more than once. Usually, more people are missed than are over counted. The difference between the census count and the true population is called the net undercount of the Census.

2 Table 1 provides the net undercount, net undercount rate and standard error of the rate for Australia and each state and territory. Further information will be released in 2940.0 - Information Paper: Census of Population and Housing, Data Quality -- Undercount, 2001 on 1 April 2003. Information on net undercount in the 1996 Census of Population and Housing including a Technical Note on sampling errors associated with statistics from the Post Enumeration Survey is available in 2940.0 - Information Paper: Census of Population and Housing, Data Quality -- Undercount, 1996.
