ABS announces further redundancy program

The Australian Statistician, David W. Kalisch, announced today that the Australian Bureau of Statistics is commencing a further redundancy program, following two voluntary redundancy programs in 2016-17.

"Starting today, there is an opportunity for voluntary redundancies for about 100 employees at the Australian Bureau of Statistics who don't have ongoing roles. Employees who are not interested in a voluntary redundancy will be supported to find redeployment opportunities, with involuntary processes eventually applying for those who are not redeployed," he said.

Most of the affected employees are in Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane.

Mr Kalisch said that some roles were no longer needed.

"The ABS is transforming, after a Government investment of almost $260 million, and this will deliver efficiencies. Some of our previous roles no longer exist."

Mr Kalisch stressed the ABS’s commitment to supporting affected staff.

“The ABS has been providing, and will continue to provide, extensive career transition support for affected staff, including career counselling and proactively seeking employment opportunities with other public and private sector organisations.”

Mr Kalisch also noted that the redundancies are not linked to any cuts to the ABS's statistical work program, but are necessary to reduce staffing to a level that is affordable within the ABS budget.

"I am grateful to staff for their contributions to the ABS and its work to inform Australia's important decisions," Mr Kalisch said.

"These redundancies are part of a planned process that will ensure the ABS has the staff it needs to meet changing statistical requirements and operate within a reduced budget."
