The Data Cubes numbered from 1 to 23 are the individual tables featured in the publication Schools, Australia, 2008 (Cat.no. 4221.0). There is both a .pdf and a zipped .pdf version for users to choose.

Data Cubes numbered 24 to 35 are time series tables, covering a majority of the available NSSC data from the mid 1990's to the most recent data collected in 2008. Tables are provided in either Supertable format, or EXCEL pivot table format. Both 'zipped' and 'unzipped' versions are also provided. Supertable and EXCEL pivot table formats provide a means of selecting any number of personalised views of the data enclosed.

Supertable comes with its own software which needs to be downloaded and installed before use. EXCEL pivot tables can be used by any client with access to EXCEL software (note that EXCEL viewer can only access the complete cross-classified table and is unable to provide new views). The EXCEL tables enclosed here have been created in EXCEL 2003 and compatability with earlier versions of EXCEL is not known.

EXCEL pivot tables consist of two spreadsheets. One is the data file which should not be altered (CSV). The other is the pivot table. The pivot table comprises a number of metadata items such as State, year, sex, affiliation, etc, and a number of data items with 'number', 'count', 'rate' or 'ratio' as a descriptor. Metadata items can be moved around between row, column and stub, while, for any particular view, a single data item should be placed in the body of a table. NOTE: EXCEL automatically produces some level of inappropriate 'totaling' of rates and ratios and clients should ignore these results when they occur.
