DFAT manages an extensive network of Australian diplomatic and consular missions abroad (tables 3.5 to 3.8), supporting Australia’s international interests and providing consular and passport services. The department’s central office is in Canberra and it also maintains offices in all of the State capitals and in Darwin, as well as Newcastle and Thursday Island.

(a) The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade manages the Australian Mission in Dili. This is expected to become an embassy when the UN-administered territory of East Timor becomes an independent State. In Taipei, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry maintains an office, the staff of which includes employees on leave without pay or seconded from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Austrade, the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs, and the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
